This project focused on cleaning up the exterior and giving this home a sharper, more finished look without changing the overall structure. The goal was simple. Take a dated mix of materials and upgrade it with better lines, better materials, and more consistent detail.

The biggest visual change came from replacing the old vinyl siding in the gables with board and batten. That alone gave the house more depth and a stronger architectural feel. It also tied everything together with the new black accents, including the updated gutters and trim.

Before: Mixed Materials and Flat Finishes

Before the work started, the home had a mix of finishes that didn’t quite work together. The gables were plain and lacked detail. The porch ceilings were standard vinyl. The gutters and soffits were white and didn’t connect visually with the rest of the house.

From both the front and the rear, the home felt a little unfinished. It wasn’t a structural issue. It was a materials and detail issue.

What We Changed

We focused on a few key upgrades that would make the biggest impact.

The gables were converted from vinyl to board and batten. This added vertical lines and gave the home a more custom look.

The porch ceilings were upgraded from vinyl to tongue and groove pine. This brought warmth into the covered areas and made the entry and porch feel more intentional.

We removed the old 4 inch white gutters and installed 6 inch black gutters. At the same time, we upgraded the soffit to match the new look.

After: Cleaner Lines and Strong Contrast

The finished result is a much sharper exterior with better contrast and more defined lines.

The black board and batten gables stand out against the brick and give the home a more updated style. The tongue and groove ceilings add warmth where it matters most, especially around the front porch and covered areas.

The upgraded 6 inch gutters handle water better and help frame the roofline. The black color pulls everything together and gives the home a more cohesive look.

Why This Works

This project shows how a few targeted upgrades can completely change the feel of a home.

  • Vertical siding adds character and breaks up large flat areas.
  • Wood ceilings add warmth and make covered spaces feel finished.
  • Black accents create contrast and give the house a stronger visual structure.
  • Larger gutters improve function while also upgrading appearance.

You don’t always need a full remodel to get a big result. When you fix the materials and the details, the entire house feels more intentional and well built.
